Now that we have returned to home port the Captain has had time to review the ship's log for information worth publishing. The trip was a total of 1398 miles, from Longboat Key near Sarasota to Marsh Harbour, Abaco and return with island hopping in between. Normally the shortest route to the east coast of FL is to cross Lake Okeechobee. This route shortens the trip by several hundred miles. East Coast port of entry is Stuart or Palm Beach. Since this wasn't possible due to low water in the lake because of the continuing drought in FL the route took Island Hopper from Sarasota to Fort Lauderdale via Captiva Island, Naples, Marathon, Key Biscayne and then to Fort Lauderdale where the crew waited for a weather window to cross the infamous gulf stream to West End, Grand Bahama about 85 miles.

Due to the gulfstream moving north at about 3 knots (like a river about 35 miles wide) any wind against this current blows up steep seas with waves that are very close together. Having done this once before in a sailboat many years ago I knew it can be very unpleasant. We waited only one extra day for tame sea conditions and it was worth the wait. The gulfstream was like a mill pond. After all it is called "pleasure boating" !

From Sarasota to the port of entry in the Bahamas, West End it was 465 miles. Total engine hours 32.6 for an average of 14.3 MPH. This leg the crew guests were Ian and Joan from Scotland. With them Island Hopper toured another 182 miles in the Abacos in 17.2 engine hours or an avg of 10.6 MPH. Once in the Bahamas the daily runs are short so the cruising speed was about 10 MPH.

Joan and Ian departed from Marsh Harbour to return via Miami to the UK. We will be their guests in Sept on their vessel on the French Canals in the Burgundy region.

The next crew from Cincinnati, Ed and Barb, reported several days later in Marsh Harbour. You will see on the blog the islands visited. Total miles 87 in 10.9 engine hours for an avg speed of 8 MPH. Laid back cruising and anchoring.

Again after a few days for maintenance, Aynsley's family arrived, Husband Tom and Granddaughter ELLA who was 27 months old. Island Hopper stayed in several marinas more than one night so they could scuba dive, swim and tour landside. Total Miles 57 in 6.7 engine hours for an avg. speed of 8.5 MPH.

They departed Island Hopper from Marsh Harbour for their flight to West Palm Beach after which the crew fueled Island Hopper with only enough fuel to reach the US at $6.15 per gallon for diesel, ouch, and headed towards West End.

The return trip stops were the same though we elected to stay an additional day at Key Biscayne to enjoy the beach and the parks and also two nights at Naples to visit relatives. In boating one must enjoy the journey as well as the destination!

Total miles from Marsh Harbour, Abaco to Longboat Key 607 miles. Total miles 1398. the amazing thing is that we never experienced one mechanical problem or grounding. Everything worked which is rare for a vessel that is 5 years old with 1400 hours on her engines. I dreaded the thought of locating a mechanic or other service person in the Bahamas. All of the preparation work paid off with some good luck thrown in.

This trip was a dream of many years, it lived up to its billing. The company of good friends and relatives made this trip very special with memories for a life time.

Island Hopper departed Tween Waters at 9:00 AM for a long run to Longboat Key Moorings. Captain Kevin decided to go on the outside, but after an hour of Seas 2 -3 feet, with close rollers up to four feet and Winds NW 15 - 20, he decided to go on the inside at Boca Grande. The ICW was moderately choppy with Winds 15 - 20. The crew saw Tarpon fisherman, since it is now Tarpon. Tarpon season.

Island Hopper departed Naples Sailing and Yacht Club at 9:15 AM heading across the river to American Marina for fuel. After fueling at 10:00 AM Captain Kevin pointed the bow towards Captiva Island. Winds were Westerly at 15 knots, Sea 2 - 3 feet. Skies sunny and weather hot!!! Kevin decided to seek the shelter of Sanibel Island for calmer seas by coming up the ICW. After traveling 50 miles, Island Hopper docked at 2:30 PM at Tween Waters Marina on Captiva Island. The crew went for a swim in the resort's pool to cool down in the 93 plus temperature.

Island Hopper stayed at Naples Sailing and Yacht Club for an additional night. This gave Captain Kevin a day to catch up on some boat maintenance and do some law work. While Kevin was on Island Hopper he saw Andrew and Ellen Glasglow from Cincinnati cruising on the river. Small world. Debbie hit the town with sister-in-law Karen Hopper for lunch and shopping. It was a great day to shop in Naples, end of the season sales. Karen prepared a fabulous meal for the crew at her beautiful home in Naples. It was a fun evening catching up and just enjoying family. Tomorrow Island Hopper heads to Captiva Island. One step closer to Tidy Island.

Island Hopper left Marathon Marina and Boat Yard a 7:45 AM to get an early start on today’s 115 mile run to Naples. Captain Kevin said it may be less if he can cut some corners. Hopefully, not in low tide areas or too close of corners. Today’s Seas 1 foot, Winds Variable 5 knots, then West 10 in the afternoon. Another smooth cruise on the Florida Bay. Island Hopper arrived at Naples Sailing and Yacht Club at 3:00 PM. The crew always enjoys being welcomed by Marilyn the Dock master, but it was her day off, so we were greeted by Fernando. Naples Sailing and Yacht Club is one of Kevin and Debbie’s favorite stops. Marilyn is a dear, the club is beautiful and our fabulous sister-in-law Karen Hopper lives in Naples. These are three great reasons to warrant a Naples visit.

Poised between the Gulf of Mexico and the Everglades, Naples belies its wild setting and Indian post past with the trappings of wealth – neo- Mediterranean-style mansions, neatly manicured golfing developments, revitalized downtown streets, lined with galleries and one of a kind shops, and a reputation for lively and eclectic dining. Visitors come for its luxury hotels – including two Ritz Cartons- its fabulous white sand beaches, fishing, shopping, theatre and arts, and a lofty reputation for golf. Yet with all of the highfalutin living, Naples still appeals to families, especially with the new water park and the new Children’s Museum of Naples that opened in 2010.

Island Hopper departed Key Biscayne Yacht Club at 8:15 AM, going to the fuel dock to take on some fuel before heading to Marathon. The skies were sunny and the wind an Easterly 5 knots with Seas 1 – 2. Skies were sunny and it was a smooth cruising day. Island Hopper arrived at Marathon Marina and Boatyard at 2:30 PM after traveling 108 miles. The owners have done a beautiful job renovating the marina. A new pool area will be completed next week.

MARATHON

Marathon is a bustling town, at least compared to other communities in the Keys. As it leaves something to be desired in the charm department, Marathon will probably not be the first choice of places to stay. Outside of Key West, Marathon has the most historic attractions, which merit a visit. Fishing, diving, and boating are the main events here. It throws Tarpon tournaments in April and May, more fishing tournaments in June and September, a birding festival in September, and a lighted boat parade around the holidays. SEVEN MILE BRIDGE

The Seven Mile Bridge is one of the most photographed images in the Keys. Actually measuring slightly less than 7 miles, it connects the Middle and Lower Keys and is believed to be the world’s longest segmental bridge. It has 39 expansion joints separating its various concrete sections. Each April runners gather in Marathon for the annual Seven Mile Bridge Run. The expanse running parallel to Seven Mile Bridge is what remains of the Old Seven Mile Bridge, an engineering and architectural marvel in its day that’s now on the National Register of Historical Places. Once proclaimed the Eighth Wonder of the World, it rested on a record 546 concrete piers. No cars are allowed on the old bridge today, but a 2 mile segment is open for biking, walking, and Rollerblading.

Island Hopper Docked At Key Biscayne Yacht Club

Island Hopper stayed in port at Key Biscayne Yacht Club due to the high winds. The winds were out of the East 15 – 20 gusting to 25 miles per hour. Not a good day to be out on the water.

Once upon a time, these barrier islands were an outpost for fisherman and sailors, pirates and salvagers, soldiers and settlers. The 95 foot Cape Florida Lighthouse stood tall during Seminole Indian battles and hurricanes. Coconut plantations covered two thirds of Key Biscayne, and there were plans as far back as 1800s to develop the picturesque island as a resort for the wealthy. Fortunately, the state and county governments set much of the land aside for parks, and both keys are home to top-ranked beaches and golf, tennis, softball, and picnicking facilities. The long and winding bike paths that run through the islands are favorites for in-line skaters and cyclists. Incorporated in 1991, the Virginia Key remains undeveloped at the moment, making these two playground islands especially family friendly. ( www.keybiscaynechamber.org )

Kevin and Debbie rode their bikes to Bill Baggs Park. It was approximately 10 miles round trip. The temperature was in the high 80s and it was hard to find shade. It was and enjoyable bike ride, but hot!!!

Thanks to great beaches, sunsets, and a lighthouse, this park at Key Biscayne’s southern tip is worth the drive. It has boardwalks, 18 picnic shelters, and two cafés that serve light lunches. A stroll or ride along walking and bicycle paths provides wonderful views of Miami’s dramatic skyline. Cape Florida Lighthouse

Cape Florida Lighthouse is South Florida’s oldest structure. The lighthouse was erected in 1845 to replace an earlier one destroyed in an 1836 Seminole attack, in which the keeper’s helper was killed. Plantings around the lighthouse and keeper’s cottage recall the island’s past. The restored lighthouse and cottage offer free tours on Thursdays to Mondays at 10 AM and 1 PM.

After returning to the boat, Kevin cooled down and then decided to head to Crandon Park on his bike. Debbie preferred to stay on Island Hopper.

The laid back park in northern Key Biscayne is popular with families, and many educated beach enthusiasts the 3-mile beach among the top 10 beaches in North America. The sand is soft, there are no riptides, there’s a great view of the Atlantic, and parking is both inexpensive and plentiful. Because it’s a weekend favorite of locals, you’ll get a good taste of multicultural Miami flavor: salsa and hip-hop, jerk chicken and barbecue ribs. Crandon Gardens at Crandon Park was once the site of a zoo. There are swans, waterfowl, and dozens of huge iguanas running loose. At the north end of the beach is the free Marjorie Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Center. Here naturalists give tours of sea-grass beds and the many red, black and green mangroves. Kevin and Debbie ate dinner at the Key Biscayne Yacht Club and were seated at the table next to other St. Petersburg Yacht Club members. It was nice chatting with the two of them.

Debbie and Kevin woke up at 6:00 AM to prepare for the crossing from the Bahamas to Florida in the gulf stream. Island Hopper departed Old Bahama Bay Marina at 7:00 AM. Skies were partly cloudy, Seas 3-4 and at times up to 5, with winds East 15 20 knots. The seas were rough and and confused at times. Luckily Island Hopper was running with the current. This was not a day for the auto-pilot. Captain Kevin used the throttle to keep Island Hopper above the waves. At times it felt like a sleigh ride. The deepest waters were 2,5000 feet. This was noted on the charts, since the depth meter doesn't register until 750 feet or less.

Kevin and Debbie did chores on the boat and then went for a walk around the resort and out on the point. The wind picked up in the afternoon. They ate dinner at marina's restaurant. Tomorrow will be an early departure for the crew, so they can get an early start for the crossing. Kevin will be closely monitoring the weather. This has been an experience of a lifetime and a dream of Kevin’s.

Aynsley, Tom And Ella Leaving In The Cab

Tom and Aynsley packed and prepared for their departure from “ Island Hopper”. After breakfast and heartfelt good-byes, Tom, Aynsley and Ella got in the taxi heading to the airport in Marsh Harbour. It has been an unforgettable 10 days aboard “Island Hopper” exploring the island and watching the three of them experience new adventures as a family and to watch Ella experience living on a boat and relishing in island life. She is definitely a water child, a little adventurer and a great traveler. Papa and Mimi see many travels in her future; Hopefully With Them!!!!!

After sending off Tom, Aynsley and Ella, “Island Hopper” departed Marsh Harbour, Boat Harbour at 10:00AM heading to Spanish Cay. Winds were NE 5 -10, Seas a light chop and a 45 mile cruise to the destination for the day.

Spanish Cay is a 3 mile long private island. ( www.spanishcay.com ) This island is very safe and a great and beautiful place for adult and kids alike. There are three beautiful beaches to relax and play. This tropical paradise is 186 acres in size and has more than 7 ½ miles of water frontage. On Spanish Cay you will find Coconut Palm trees, Royal Poinciannas, Frangipani, wild orchids, Bouganvilla and Hibiscus There are several rare albino white owls nesting on the island and are often seen at dusk. There are also Ring Necked Pheasants, Dove, Quail, several species of Hummingbirds and thousands of hermit crabs. Great shelling is found on the five beaches that rake daily to keep it clear of sea weeds. The 3rd largest barrier reef is located a quarter mile SE of the island. There is a sunken airplane in about 15 feet of water on the north end of the island by the airport.

Spanish Cays Airport is a 5,000 foot paved runway with Customs and Immigration service available 7 days a week. The airport is private and available to the island’s homeowners, marina guests and hotel guests. Many quests leave their boats at the marina and use the island’s charter service or their own planes to fly back to the United States.

The Wrecker’s Raw Bar is open May – July and is a short walk to the marina. The bar is built directly over the water. The view of the ocean and the sunset is just astounding.

The island has two tennis courts for the guest’s enjoyment. Golf carts are available for rental. The Bar and Game Room has pool tables, shuffleboard, ping-pong and darts. Karaoke is run selected nights of the week with a selection of over 28,000 songs. (Did you read this Tom??? Karaoke Heaven!!!

The island has 9 generators that supply power to the entire island, including the marina. All of the water is from Reverse Osmosis; they make over 26,000 gallons per day and store over 150,000 gallons in tanks. The marina asks that guests be mindful of power during the hours of 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM, since this is when the most power is used.

Island Hopper arrived at the dock around 2:30 PM. After getting the boat tied up and ready to hook up the electricity, the dock master, Merrel, informed the crew he had put “Island Hopper” in the wrong slip. The slip he put Island Hopper in was reserved. With approximately 70 open slips Kevin and Debbie had a few questions for Merrel. After his apologies “Island Hopper” was moved one slip over. Go figure! After checking in at the office, the owner told Kevin and Debbie the first round of drinks were on him. Kevin and Debbie walked the entire island to see the sights and get some exercise. It is small and very private. There are only 5 private homes on the entire island. Don Davis bought Treasure Cay 13 years ago from the owner at the time, for the Dallas Cowboys. Don is quite the entrepreneur. He is from Dallas, Texas, but has his main residence in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. He owns the yacht MV Status Quo that is on Yacht World for 27.9 million dollars. The boat was not completed by the time of the scheduled delivery, so he bought the shipyard. He renamed the company Richmond Yachts, for the city it resides in Canada. Mr. Davis also owns numerous restaurants throughout the US. He was very interesting to talk with and is quite the character. You can find him singing karaoke in the bar.

In the slip nest to “Island Hopper” ( The Reserved One) were a boat with three sport fishermen. They caught some fish and chopped it up to entice the sharks to feed. Kevin and Debbie saw a 6 foot lemon shark take the fish from the fisherman’s hand near the water. The shark swam right up and put his head out of the water to grab the fish. There were other smaller lemon sharks in the area also. A huge ray swam under the sharks to catch and eat the scraps. It was quite the sight to see.

Kevin and Debbie ate dinner at the Point House Restaurant and Bar. Conch Chowder for Debbie and SHE Crab soup for Kevin. Both were delicious. For entrées both Kevin and Debbie had The Spanish Key Grouper. While Kevin and Debbie were eating dinner, the owner’s dog Molly sat by their table and eyed every bite.

Finally, the waitress took her into the kitchen to be fed. One word to describe the meal, Outstanding!!!!!! But that was not enough, they were easily enticed by Don’s brother-in-law into ordering a piece of banana bread pudding. Again, a dessert to be remembered for a long time.

The crew rented a center console to explore the Lubbers Cay. The rental boat was a 23 foot Concept. The crew prepared for the day and boarded the boat. It was a quick 7 mile trip to Lubbers Cay for lunch at Cracker P’s. Captain Tom and First Mate Kevin got the crew to the lunch destination safely. Fresh fish dip for an appetizer to share and the casual meals of snapper, conch and chicken. After making purchases of T-shirts, koozies and Cracker P’s hot sauce, it was back to the boat for a cruise to Tahiti Beach.

TAHITI BEACH

This small beach at the southern tip of Elbow Cay is a popular boater’s stop. The soft white sand is well protected from the close ocean cut by thick vegetation, a few barrier cays, and shallow water. This shallow area is popular for shelling, and of course simply relaxing and watching the tide rise. At low tide, the true beauty of this beach is revealed when a long sand split emerges, perfect for picnics. It’s great for young children, as the water on one side of the spit is ankle deep, stays calm, and remains warm. During peak season the beach can become a bit crowded.

Captain Tom and First Mate Kevin anchored the boat in a small cove at Tahiti Bay. The water was about 4 ½ feet by the boat and of course, became more shallow closer to shore. The crew walked along the beach in awe of its beauty. Ella wasn’t enjoying the walking in the sand, but she enjoyed being carried through the water. Such a relaxing way to take in the beauty of the Abacos. While walking on the beach, a local approached Debbie and kindly told her that the Island Hopper’s crew had anchored in an area infested with jelly fish. Well, after quick negations, Debbie, Aynsley and Ella said they would be picked up at the dock instead of swimming back to the boat. All for the safety of Ella! Kevin and Tom, “Island Hopper’s Heroes” walked safely in the water back to the center console. No stings from jelly fish.

Debbie and Aynsley saw a couple of jelly fish that had washed up on the beach. Everyone was aboard the boat and headed back to Abaco Beach Resort, Boat Harbour. It was such a fun day renting the boat and exploring Tahiti Beach on foot. Ella loved it and laughed the entire time the boat was cruising fast. She is such a little sport. After returning to Boat Harbour, Debbie and Aynsley took Ella to the pool, while Kevin and Tom returned the boat.

Tonight the crew had a fabulous meal at Angler’s, the restaurant at Abaco Beach Resort. Theresa the server is so sweet and the crew enjoying talking with her about the island. Sunday night just happened to have music. Debbie & Aynsley passed a note to the musician saying, “Tom would like to sing Suspicious Eyes by Elvis Presley. Well, Tom was called to join him at the microphone. Tom did a great rendition, while Aynsley, Debbie and Ella danced. It was another fun night.

The it was back to the boat for Ella to jump in bed with Papa and Mimi. This has become her nightly ritual. She tells Aynsley, “Bye, Bye and to shut the door”. Kevin and Debbie have had an experience of a lifetime. Waking up and seeing Ella in the morning and snuggling with her nightly before she is taken to her bunk. PRICELESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Then it was off in the dingy to Hope Town. After walking around for over 2 hours, the crew went to Hope Town Lodge for a local drink. (http://www.hopetownlodge.com/) Then back to the dingy for another fun ride to Island Hopper. Salsa and chips for an appetizer and back on the dingy for a short ride to Harbour's Edge Restaurant. Ella loved the dingy ride and really enjoyed the ride back with the flashlight. Only one problem, she wanted to hold the flashlight instead of the painter. Back to the boat safely.

Just hanging out in Guana. Aynsley and Tom left Island Hopper at 9:15 AM to go to Guana Dive for two dives today. Ella stayed behind to play with Papa and Mimi. Captain Papa, Mimi and Ella drove the golf cart around town. Tom and Aynsley dove at Fowl Cay. The first dive was 55 feet and the second one was 30 feet. They saw reef shark and a grouper named Gilly, who followed them the entire dive. Tom wanted to bring Gillie back to Island Hopper for a pet. He couldn't order grouper the rest of the vacation. Ahhhh Gillie. The crew later found out, that Gillie is the president of save the grouper organization. He is doing a fine job converting one person (Tom) at a time to eat "More Mahi Mahi".

After diving Kevin and Debbie picked up Tom and Aynsley and the crew drove to Nippers for lunch. A few Kalik lights and some Frozen Nippers for the adult crew, while Ella had a gumbay juice. Fun day at Nippers. Then it was back to the marina for some swimming and fun in the sun. Dinner was at Orchid Bay. Another outstanding meal. The crew said their sad good byes to Berkley and Haywood. Hopefully we will return again.

Aynsley and Tom did two dives, while Papa and Mimi went weeing around the island with Ella. Their fist dive was 40 feet and the sceond dive 25 feet. They said visibility was excellent. They saw a reef shark and a sea turtle. Later in the day the crew went swimming and planning in water. Dinner tonight at Orchid Bay's Restaurant. Great Bahamian food.

GOOD MORNING TREASURE CAY, ABACOS

Ella Loving Her New Island Life

After breakfast Island Hopper departed Treasure Cay at 10:30 AM. The original plan was to go to Green Turtle Cay, but the winds were too strong and the water too rough to cross Whale Key Passage. Captain Kevin selected Orchid Bay Marina, Guana Cay as the next destination. It was a 1 1/2 hour run, traveling 14 miles Winds were 1o - 15 out of the east with gusts to 20 and seas 1 -2 with a moderate chop. Island Hopper arrived at Orchid Bay at 12:00 PM. McKenzie, the dock master greeted the crew upon their arrival. Lunch on the boat and then off to explore the island in the golf cart. The first stop was Dive Guana. Aynsley and Tom wanted to check out the dive shop and book two dives for tomorrow. The second stop was Baker's Bay. A beautiful new development on the Northwrn coast of Guana Cay. The final stop was Nippers. Two Frozen Nipper Rums and two Kaliks. Ella had fun playing with Nipper and Rosie, two dogs from the Orchid Bay boat dock.

The crew rented a golf cart to explore the island. Well, not much to see. The first stop was Abaco Ceramics. A few purchases for a reminder of a fun times had on Treasure Cay. Christmas ornaments were bought for the tree. Ella picked out a little fish for her room. The crew got back in the cart and found a local restaurant, "The Burner" to have a Bahamian lunch. As Aynsley said, "They had great food for a dive". The meals selected were conch, snapper, chicken wings and Ella's favorite "FRIES". Then back in the golf cart and on the road to see more adventures. The first landmark was the elementary school then a church. The golf cart was a great way to get a feel of the island.

After breakfast everyone prepared to leave Abaco Beach for Treasure Cay. Island Hopper departed at 10:30 AM arriving at Treasure Cay at 1:00 PM traveling 23 miles. Winds were East 10 -15, Seas 1 -2. Sunny and 80's. It was another wonderful day to be on the seas. Ella helped Papa captain Island Hopper. Tom served as First Mate and Aynsley and Debbie were the lazy crew. As Island Hopper approached the port, Debbie & Tom took their positions with the lines. Debbie was bow and spring, while Tom did the stern lines. It was an easy docking due to the talented crew. Aynsley was on Ella watch and all went well on the bridge.

The crew woke up around 8:30 AM. Kevin, Aynsley and Tom walked into town to Java Cafe for some coffee. Ella stayed back on the boat with Mimi. They had breakfast and played crab ball. Debbie, Aynsley and Ella walked into town to do some shopping, while Kevin and Tom rode bikes all over Marsh Harbour. Tom said the driving on the left was really confusing him. Always remember look right first. The crew met up at Snappers for a local lunch.

After lunch it was back to the marina for some fun and swimming at the pool. The crew imbibed in some island drinks, while Ella had her first party drink, a frozen mango juice. She was so excited and actually drank the entire drink.

The crew had fresh conch salad from Show-Boo's Conch Stand as an appetizer. Show-Boo's has a handwritten sign that read, "Just Be Nice" on the ramshcackle stand, between Harbour View and Conch Inn marinas. The conch salad is made fresh daily. The proprietor claims to offer, "the world's best conch salad". For dinner they went to Mangoes for some Bahamian food. Tom and Aynsley had fried conch and Debbie had conch chowder. They figured they would not be served conch any time soon in Cincinnati. Marsh Harbour was quiet. No bands in the restaurants or bars, so it was back to Island Hopper.

Island Hopper departed Sea Spray's dock at 11:00 AM for a short run to the home base at Abaco Beach Resort Boat Harbour. (http://www.abacobeachresort.com/) Travel was slow due to a very low tide. Winds were East 10 -15, Seas 1 -2, sunny skies and temperatures a lovely 80 degrees. Island Hopper arrived at the dock at 12:00 Noon. After having lunch aboard, Barb and Debbie walked into the town for some shopping. Ed and Barb left to fly home at 1:45 PM. It was a fabulous 8 days with great friends.

Leaving The Harbour - A Fishing Hut

After breakfast on Island Hopper, Ed, Barb and Kevin took the dingy to Hope Town to get some groceries. Island Hopper departed Hideaways Marina at 11:00 AM for a very short and easy 6 mile run to Sea Spray Resort and Marina at the south end of White Sound. Winds were out of the East 5 -10, Seas 1 -2 and the skies were mostly cloudy with temperatures in the low 80's. Debbie and Barb rode most of the trip on the bow.

Sea Spray Resort and Marina is the place you want to go if you would like to catch a few waves, or you just want to get away from it all. The Atlantic Ocean is on one side and White Sound is on the other. The marina has 60 slips and the resort has a restaurant and pool bar. The crew walked about 3 miles toward Hope Town. The overcast skies made it a great day for walking around the area.

Island Hopper departed Orchid Bay at 11:00 AM, arriving at Hope Town Hideaways at 12:00 Noon. Winds were out of the East 10 -12, seas 1 -2, partly cloudy with temperatures in the high 70's to low 80's. A beautiful day to be on the water. It was a very short cruising day, which makes it nice for the crew. Lunch on Island Hopper and then off to adventures.

Ed, Barb and Kevin walked to the Hope Town Lighthouse. The crew took the dingy into Hope Town visiting the stores and local landmarks. The crew then got back in the dingy for a harbor cruise. Kevin, Ed and Barb went for a swim, while Debbie read the book about "Out Island Doctor". Barb bought the book and it is such a good read while visiting the islands. Happy Hour on Island Hopper. The church bells started ringing at 6:00 PM. What a beautiful sound across the harbour. The crew boarded the dingy for a quick ride to Harbour's Edge. The dingy is tied right up to the restaurant and just a ladder climb to the table. Fresh fish and local dishes, while watching an amazing sunset.

The Crew Is Waiting For The End, But Hopefully It Will Not Come And We Can Enjoy More Of The Abacos. But Then Again, What A Place To Go. Pure Paradise!!!!

The crew took about a 5 mile walk to the Atlantic side of the island. It was a beautiful morning and such a wonderful way to start the day. Island Hopper departed the dock at 10:30 AM and stopped to anchor and swim around 12:00 Noon. Barb and Debbie prepared lunch and then everyone jumped in the water to cool off and enjoy some time in the water. Ed snorkeled and Kevin fixed some zincs and cleaned a little on the props. After seeing two small barracudas and a small nurse shark, the crew returned to the boat and readied the equipment for a quick cruise to Orchid Bay.

Island Hopper departed Treasure Cay at 9:25 with winds out of the East 10 -15, Seas 1-2 and the temperature in the 80's. Today's cruise was 19.7 miles. Island Hopper arrived at Green Turtle Cay around 11:15 AM.

The crew took the dingy to New Plymouth. Ed and Barb toured the Albert Lowe Museum, New Plymouth's most frequently visited attraction. It is the Bahamas' oldest historical museum dedicated to Albert Lowe a model ship builder. Next the crew walked down the street to the Memorial Sculpture Garden. The past is the present in this garden, across the street from the New Plymouth Inn. The busts of local residents are immortalized in busts perched on pedestals.

A Beautiful View Everywhere You Look

Island Hopper's crew went for a walk prior to departing Abaco Beach Resort. Island Hopper left the dock at 11:00 AM to go to the fuel dock prior to heading to Treasure Cay. The skies were overcast with a brief period of rain. Winds were 5 - 10 from the southwest and seas 1 - 2 with temperatures in the 80's. Island Hopper traveled 24 miles and arrived at 1:30 PM.

Island Hopper departed the dock at 9:30 AM traveling only 6 miles to Marsh Harbour. Winds were south at 20 mile (Conservative) and seas were 1 -2 feet. Island Hopper arrived at Abaco Beach Resort and Boat Harbour at 10:15 AM.

Marsh Harbour

Marsh Harbour is the Bahamas' third largest city and the Abacos' commercial center. Besides having the Abacos's largest international airport, boaters consider Marsh Harbour to be one of the easiest harbors to enter. It has several full service marinas, including the 190-slip Boat Harbour Marina where Island Hopper will dock. Marsh Harbour has a more diverse variety of restaurants, shops, and grocery items than other communities.

The crew walked to town and Joan and Debbie were sad that the shops were closed on Sunday, but there is always tomorrow. Shops open Monday at 9:00 AM. Alarm clocks are being set by Joan and Debbie.

Island Hopper departed Man-O-War Marina at 9:00 AM for Elbow Cay. Winds were from the South at 10 miles, Seas 1-2 and the temperature was in the 70's, but predicted to get into the mid 80's. Island Hopper arrived at Hope Town Marina at 10:00 AM.

ELBOW CAY

Five-mile long Elbow Cay's main attraction is the charming village of Hope Town. The salt box cottages - painted in bright colors or softly muted pastels- with their white picket fences, flowering gardens, and porches and sills decorated with conch shells, reminds one of a New England seaside community, Bahamian style. Most of the 300 -odd residents' families have lived here for several generations, in some cases as many as 10. There are two main roads on the island. No cars are permitted to enter Hope Town proper.

After getting the boat tied and the electric turned on, Ian and Kevin readied the dingy for a short ride to see the Hope Town Lighthouse.

Upon arrival in Hope Town Harbour, the first thing you see is the much photographed Bahamas landmark, a 120- foot-tall, peppermint-stripe lighthouse built in 1838. The light's construction was delayed for several years by acts of vandalism; then-residents feared it would end the profitable wrecking practice. Today, the lighthouse is one of the Bahamas' last three hand-turned, kerosene-fueled beacons. There is no road between the lighthouse and the town proper, so one must go by ferry or boat.

The crew took the dingy for a ride around the harbour. After a sightseeing crew they docked the dingy and walked through Harbor Town. A little shopping, actually very little shopping, and then lunch at Cap'n Jack's for fish salads and fish sandwiches. After lunch Ian, Joan, Kevin and Debbie walked to the Hope Town Harbour Lodge. It is a casually classy resort with spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean and the beach. It was then back to the dingy for another harbour cruise to Island Hopper.

Tonight the crew had dinner at Harbour's Edge, Hope Town's happening hangout for locals and tourists, this bar and restaurant's deck is the best place to watch the goings-on in the busy harbour. The crew tied the dingy right in front of the restaurant. Another wonderful evening spent with great friends and wonderful surroundings. We are living the good life! Life is good, but life on Island Hopper is gooder!

The crew went for a walk to Nippers and then down the stairs for a beautiful stroll along the beach. The surf was calmer than yesterday. After the walk the crew had the Goombay Fruit juice at Nippers' Bar. No alcohol - too early!!!! (http://www.nippersbar.com/)

The crew departed Great Guana Cay at 1:00 PM, after waiting for a rising tide. Island Hopper's destination was Man-O-War Cay. Winds were South at 6 and the Seas were 1-2. Fewer than 300 people live on skinny, 2 1/2 mile long Man-O-War Cay, many of them descendants of early Loyalists settlers who started the tradition of handcrafting boats more than two centuries ago. These residents remain proud of their heritage and continue to build their famous fiberglass boats today. The island is secluded, and the old-fashioned, family-oriented roots show in the local policy toward liquor; it isn't sold anywhere on the island. (but folks don't mind if you bring your own.) Three churches, a one-room schoolhouse, several shops, grocery stores, and restaurants that cater largely to visitors round out the tiny island's offerings. A mile north of the island is the wreck of the USS Adirondack, which sank after hitting a reef in 1862. It lies among a host of cannons in 20 feet of water.

The crew walked into town visiting both Albury's Sail Shop and Joe's Studio, two well know businesses on Man-O-War. The Sail Shop, which is popular with boaters makes duffel bags, briefcases, hats, and purses, all made from duck, a colorful, sturdy canvas fabric traditionally used for sails.

Joe's Studio is a small shop that sells paintings by local artists and souvenir type gifts.

Leaving Green Turtle Cay

Island Hopper departed Green Turtle Cay Club Marina at 11:00 AM for Treasure Cay. Winds were 10 out of the Southeast. MV Island Hopper had to go out in the Atlantic Ocean to round Whale Cay. Luckily the conditions were benign. Island Hopper arrived after a 21 mile cruise at 1:00 PM. The crew jumped ship to go shopping (Modest at best! Kevin and Ian are loving it!), sunning on the beach and a quick dip in the pool. The skies began going gray and the winds started blowing. A light storm came in from the sea. Treasure Cay Twenty miles north of Marsh Harbour is Treasure Cay, technically not an island but a large peninsula connected to Great Abaco by a narrow spit of land. This was once the site of the first Loyalist settlement in Abaco, called Carlton. While Treasure Cay is a large-scale real-estate development project. it's also a wonderful small community where expatriate residents share the laid-back, sun-and sea vibe with longtime locals. The development's centerpiece is the Treasure Cay Hotel Resort and marina, with its Dick Wilson-designed golf course and a 150- slip marina that has boat rentals, a dive shop, pool, restaurant, and a lively bar. Despite its name, there is no hotel at the resort, only a large grouping of condominiums and villas around the marina. Treasure Cay's commercial center consists of two rows of shops near the resort as well as a post office, Laundromat, ice cream parlor, a couple-stocked grocery store, BalTelCo, the Bahamian telephone company. (where Kevin bought a telephone to use in the Bahamas and to call the U.S.)

Island Hopper departed Treasure Cay at 10:30AM, winds of of the NE at 15, Seas 1-2. It was a sunny day with the temperatures in the 80s. Island Hopper went 21.4 miles to Orchid Bay Marina on Great Guana Cay, arriving at 12:00 Noon.

The essence of Great Guana Cay can be summed up by its unofficial motto, painted on a hand-lettered sign:
IT'S BETTER IN THE BAHAMAS, BUT IT'S GOODER IN GUANA.

This sliver of an inlet just off Great Abaco, accessible by ferry from March Harbour or by private boat, is the kind of place people picture when they dream of running off to disappear on an exotic island, complete with alluring deserted beaches and grassy dunes. Only 100 full time residents live on 7-mile-long Great Guana Cay, where you're more likely to run into a rooster than a car during your stroll around the tranquil village. Still, there are just enough luxuries here to make a stay comfortable, including a couple of laid back resorts and Nippers Restaurant with one of the best party scenes in the Abacos. It is by far, the main hot spot on the island particularly on Sundays when droves of customers flock to the site to eat, drink, socialize and simply let themselves go. In many cases the name Nippers is synonymous with Guana Cay. Golf carts or bicycles are the main transportation for exploring the island; however, some sections are gated or private communities with the northern end of the island dedicated to the Baker's Bay and Ocean Club development, while a great portion of the island's southern end has been claimed by Orchid Bay where Island Hopper docked.

Island Hopper's crew pulled up the anchor at 9:00 AM headed to Green Turtle Cay. The crew arrived at Green Turtle Cay Club 2:30 PM, traveling 69 miles.

Green Turtle Cay is a tiny 3-mile-by 1/2-mile island steeped in Loyalist history; some residents can trace their heritage back more than 200 years. Dotted with ancestral New England-style cottage homes, the cay is surrounded by several deep bays, sounds, bonefish flats, and irresistible beaches. New Plymouth, first settled in 1783, is Green Turtle's main community. Many of its approximately 550 residents earn a living by diving for conch or selling lobster and fish. There are a few grocery and hardware stores, several gift shops, a post office, a bank, a handful of restaurants, and several offices. The crew rented a golf cart and driven by Ian, headed out to explore the island. The first stop was the Albert Lowe Museum, the most frequently visited attraction is the Bahamas' oldest historical museum, dedicated to a model-ship builder and direct descendant of the island's original European-American settlers. Mrs. Ivy Roberts, the museum's director, enjoyed showing the crew around and sharing stories of life in the Out Islands before the days of high-speed Internet and daily airline flights. Next they did a quick walk through the Memorial Sculpture Garden. Immortalized in busts perched on pedestals are local residents who have made important contributions to the Bahamas. Plaques detail the accomplishments of British Loyalists, their descendants, and the descendants of those bright as slaves, such as Jeanne I. Thompson, a contemporary playwright and the country's second woman to practice law. The garden and open, free to the public.

Before leaving town and heading back to the marina, the crew stopped at Miss Emily's Blue Bee Bar for a world famous Goombay Smash. They say Goombay novices undersetimate the drink's potency, and end up making it an early night. Miss Emily Cooper, creator of the Goombay Smash drink, passed away in 1997, but her daughter Violet continues to serve up the famous rum, pineapple juice, and apricot brandy concoction. Ian, Joan, Kevin and Debbie had one drink each, served by Violet. She was very friendly and quite personable.

After the Goombay Smash it was back to the Island Hopper on the golf cart. The crew had dinner at Green Turtle Club dining room harborside on a covered screen patio. After dinner there was coffee and chocolate chip cookies on the boat.

The crew woke up early, around 6:00 AM for a 7:20 AM departure for the West End, Grand Bahamas. It took a little over 4 1/2 hours to go 84 miles. The water depth exceeded 2,000 feet at times. The crew decided not to stop for a swim, since their feet might not touch.:) Seas were 1 -2 and winds were 5 - 10 out of the southeast. It was the PERFECT day for the crossing.

Island Hopper docked at Old Bahama Bay Resort & Yacht Harbour, West End, Grand Bahama Island. The resort is an oasis surrounded by water on three sides, near the fishing village of West End. Old Bahama Bay is proud to be a Blue Flag marina with 72 transient slips and state-of-the-art facilities. The marina's Customs and Immigration office is the closest Bahamian Port of Entry to the Florida coast. This made it very easy and convenient to clear customs. After lunch on the boat, the crew went to the beach and the pool for some fun in the sun.

Island Hopper departed the dock at 9:00 AM. She then powered over to the fuel dock to fill up for the voyage. Weather is cloudy with a chance of rain. Temperatures in the 80s. Winds predicted 10 - 15 with a forecasted from coming our way. The clouds make the cruise comfortable.

The journey is 60 miles to Coral Ridge Yacht Club, Ft. Lauderdale. There were two bridges that opened on a timed schedule. The first, West Venetian Causeway Bridge opened at 11:00 AM. The second bridge needed to open for Island Hopper is Broad Causeway.

Island Hopper departed Marathon, Florida at 8:00 AM. Sunny high 80's light wind 5 - 10, seas 1 -2. Island Hopper arrived in Key Biscayne at 2:30 PM It was a wonderful day on the water. After arriving at the Key Biscayne Yacht Club the crew walked to the town area.

Once upon a tine, these barrier islands were an outpost for fisherman and sailors, pirates and salvagers, soldiers and settlers. The 95 foot Cape Florida Lighthouse stood tall during Seminole Indian battles and hurricanes Coconut plantations covered two thirds of Key Biscayne, and there were plans as far back as the 1800s to develop the picturesque island as a resort for the wealthy. Fortunately, the state and the county governments set so much land aside for parks, and both keys are now home to top ranked beaches, and golf, tennis, softball, and picnicking facilities. The long and winding bike paths that run through the islands are favorites for in-line skaters and cyclists. Incorporated in 1991, the village of Key Biscayne is a hospitable community of 10,500; Virginia Key remains undeveloped at the moment, making these two playground islands especially family friendly

Joan and Debbie enjoyed a walk to Third Street and shopping in the many elegant stores. The crew ate dinner at the beautiful Naples Yacht Club. A wonderful evening was enjoyed by all.

Joan and Ian Downs arrived from Ayr, Scotland on Thursday, April 28th. They vacationed for a few days with Kevin and Debbie at their Florida home on Tidy Island. (http://www.tidyisland.org/) Thursday night they had a good old American dinner of steak with a Florida sidekick of fresh stone crabs. Stone crab seasons ends May 15th in Florida. Captain Kevin will be happy when the pots are out of the water, but the fresh crabs will be greatly missed.

Friday the crew did some sight seeing at the Marie Selby Gardens in Sarasota. (http://www.selby.org/) It was a splendid day to be outside and enjoy the beauty of nature. Saturday morning was used provisioning and readying Island Hopper for the journey. Saturday evening was spent with good friends from Tidy Island, Kurt and Pam Graetzer. Kurt and Pam brought Kevin a gift from Guatemala that you will see in a future post or posts on the blog. Ian and Joan enjoyed meeting them and hearing about the Graetzer's most recent travel to Guatemala, during dinner at the Lazy Lobster restaurant on Longboat Key.

Sunday morning the crew woke up early with excitement to leave port. Island Hopper departed Longboat Key Moorings at 9:30 AM. The seas were 2 -3 feet and the wind 15-20 out of the east with diminishing winds. Island Hopper arrived at Tween Waters Inn at 3:30 PM traveling 70 miles. Twin Waters Inn (http://www.tween-waters.com/) Besides the inns great beach to bay location, it has historic value. In the 1930s, Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist and conservationist "Ding" Darling, namesake of Sanibel's refuge, stayed in its historic cottages. The crew had a fabulous dinner at The Old Captiva House restaurant on the property.

On Friday February 25 we left Pass a Grille and headed back to our home port of Longboat Key Marina. (http://www.longboatkeymarina.com/) Winds were predicted to be 15-20 knots from the south so we stayed "inside" until we crossed Tampa Bay heading south. WE took a channel paralleling the I 275 highway leading to the Skyway bridge until we entered the bay. with Fresh winds the kite and windsurfers were out.

After an uneventful cruise of 27 miles we arrived "home". WE hosed the salt off Island Hopper and headed home.

As an intermediate stop before our home port of Longboat Key we docked for the evening at Pass a Grille clubhouse of the SPYC. Two blocks from a beautiful beach. Nice protected marina with a clubhouse and a restaurant. WE bicycled to the village and checked out the beautiful beach near the Don Cesar Hotel on St Pete Beach. We met some cruising friends from the SPYC for dinner.

We left on Thursday morning after the fog cleared. Our next destination was the Pass a Grille clubhouse of St Pete Yacht Club about 35 miles. Because the weather prediction was excellent, sunny 70's winds south at 5 knots we decided to head back out into the Gulf for the passage to Pass a Grille inlet, just north of the entrance to Tampa Bay. This inlet is very reliable, well marked and with no shoaling so we gave it a shot, luckily no problems were encountered.

We were half way there, 3 miles offshore opposite Clearwater Beach, and we were stopped by a Customs Boat and boarded. The officers' checked the Ship's papers and our ID's, I presented my coast guard credentials as I have a Captain's License. They stayed for 15 minutes radioing back to their boat. I suspect checking our ID's through their computer. They asked if we had been in a foreign port, I responded, "No, unless you count Tarpon Springs as a foreign port with all the Greeks." They didn't chuckle. Nor did their checklist include Grey Poupon!

They went back to their vessel and departed. We continued our cruise to Pass a Grill.

We enjoyed our visit to Tarpon Springs a Greek fishing village north of Clearwater. Very Touristy but fun. Plenty of sponges for sale and Greek restaurants to visit. Very picturesque community.

Entering Tarpon Springs on the Anclote River

We were delayed leaving Clearwater due to AM fog. Even with radar and GPS it can be a challenge due to other vessels that go too fast for the conditions. We were headed to Tarpon Springs which is 22 miles away, north on the ICW and then up the Anclote River. Since the weather was perfect we elected to go out Clearwater Pass into the Gulf. This is much easier than negotiating the ICW which has become shallow in spots. AS we turned up the Anclote River I noted a fog bank rolling in off the Gulf. I turned on the Navigation lights and the Radar just in time for the visibility to be reduced to 500 feet. I noted a few green blobs on the radar approaching, I blew our horn as required by the rules of the road and there appeared two large shrimp boats headed out to sea. We passed safely in a tight channel. The fog lifted as quickly as it had rolled in.

We traveled from SPYC to Clearwater Beach to stay at the Clearwater Yacht Club. This club only has a few transient slips so if we are in Clearwater we usually stay at the Municipal Marina about 1 mile away. Since this was a Tuesday night we were able to obtain a slip. Nice club, with emphasis on sailing and racing. The club was hosting over 100 Lasers (small sailboats for one person) from all over the country. While there a member saw Island Hopper's hailing port of Cincinnati and introduced himself. He was also from Cincy, and happened to be an attorney. Jerry Harris by name. He spends the winter in FL and enjoys helping with the regattas at CYC.

After checking out the beach and the town by bicycle the crew had a nice meal at CYC.

Fog in the AM delayed our departures

Leaving SPYC

After two nights with the SPYC cruising club we departed on Sunday afternoon after a bike ride around Davis Island and downtown Tampa. The captain pointed the bow of Island Hopper towards St Petersburg and the docks of SPYC. Only 20 miles down the bay so we took it easy at 9 knots on a beautiful sunny day. WE enjoyed two nights at SPYC taking in the new Dali museum and the Chilhuly collection as well as good biking and eating. dinner the first night at SPYC followed by a pub called the Moon under Water, great curry dishes surprisingly.

Debbie with her new Panama Hat from Ybor City We took the Trolley from the marina to Ybor City in Tampa This vessel transports yachts to far away destinations. She sinks to allow the yachts to sail in and then she refloats. The yachts and their Captains end up in foreign ports for about $1000 per foot of length. So Island Hopper could end up in the Med for about $55,000. We found a nearby dog park on Tampa Bay. Salt water and all

. We have been remiss in posting this year of our travels on Island Hopper. Several cruises in between cold fronts to Captiva Island and St Petersburg Yacht Club. We had to shorten a trip that we had planned to make to Naples due to high winds and anther cold front in January. February is turning out to be a great month for weather. We traveled to Tampa (Marjorie Park Marina) with 12 boats from the SPYC cruising group. beautiful weather and a great venue. We traveled from Longboat Key to Tampa on Friday 49 miles and 4 hours up Tampa Bay after crossing Sarasota Bay. Beautiful day so we cruised at 9 knots and a bit at 20 so I could arrive early enough for a conference call at 4PM.
